Larry Hoover, born on November 30, 1950, in Jackson, Mississippi, is the co-founder of the Gangster Disciples, a Chicago-based street gang. At 13, he joined the Supreme Gangsters, which later merged with the Black Disciples to form the Black Gangster Disciple Nation. In 1973, Hoover was convicted of murder and sentenced to 150–200 years in prison. While incarcerated, he was found to have continued orchestrating gang activities, leading to a 1997 federal conviction on charges including drug conspiracy and money laundering, resulting in six additional life sentences.
On May 28, 2025, former President Donald Trump commuted Hoover's federal sentences. However, Hoover remains incarcerated due to his state murder conviction. His case has garnered public attention, notably from rapper Kanye West, who, alongside Drake, held a "Free Larry Hoover" benefit concert in 2021 to advocate for his release.
